The Book of Proverbs

Every day I am challenged as I read the Word of God. The Book of Proverbs is like a piece of sand paper being applied to a rough piece of wood. It smooths out the rough places. Imagine being that piece of wood, in fact, we are that piece of wood. Here is one verse I read yesterday. Proverbs 17:27-28.

“A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered. Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.”

Ouch!!! That sand paper hurts so good. I need to grow in God. Keep reading the Word and let God hurt you so good. Pastor Bob

Complaining

In Numbers 11: 4-35, Moses is faced with an impossible situation. He has a rebellion on his hands because the people are unhappy with the menu and he feels powerless to meet the need. Moses complains to God and asks God to take his life. Did Moses care for his people? You bet. That is what is so devastating about complaining. It hurts the people closest to you. It hurts the people that have a vision for your life and that care for you. Here are a few of my thoughts on complaining. I am not casting stones against anyone because I have to examine myself first.

1. Complaining is based in fear and doubt and unbelief. It shrinks God down to smaller than the problem.

2. Complaining puts one in the realm of the flesh and not the Spirit.

3. Complaining focuses on the problem. Being thankful focuses on God.

4. Complaining sees why things are so bad. Thankfulness sees why things are so good.

5. Complaining is backward looking. Faith is forward looking.

6. Complaining sees problems. Faith sees the answers.

7. Complaining is contagious. Faith is courageous.

8. Complaining craves for something. Faith prayers for something.

9. Complaining spouts off. Faith sprouts up (towards God).

10. Complaining builds doubts. Speaking the word builds faith.

11. Complaining diminishes God’s provision. Thankfulness rejoices in God’s provision.

I hope this helps you. Praise God. Pastor Bob

Seeing More Clearly

Image

The Hubble telescope provides scientists the opportunity to observe space with fresh eyes. Things that were impossible to see before can be viewed without the distractions that the atmosphere of the earth brings. That’s what prayer does. It opens our eyes to see things without the distractions of this world. Then we can see more clearly.

Once scientists saw the world through the Hubble telescope, they realized that space was much bigger than they thought. Measuring distance in light years proves grossly inadequate. The numbers describing the distances to the new found galaxies overwhelms the viewers with the size of the universe.

What does that mean to us? Our prayers open our eyes to the vastness of the universe and the greatness of our God who made the universe. Seeing our problems through the viewfinder of our prayers helps us to trust that God has the ability and the desire to answer our prayers. Keep praying and watch what our God does. Pastor Bob

The Impossible Dream

ImageI had the privilege of going to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. What an inspiration it was to see the impossible become the possible. Sure there were tremendous problems to overcome and it took a long time, but the mission was accomplished.

For those that don’t remember, President Kennedy made the challenge for America that we would put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. That was during a time when America was behind the Soviet Union and seemed to be unable to catch up. Failure after failure left America nestled in the nest of inferiority with little chance for change. But America joined together behind Kennedy and did the impossible.

It was truly inspirational to see what man can do if he is unified. What can man do if he is unified behind God? How can God answer our prayers and change the direction of this country? Just as America felt defeated back in the sixties, American acts defeated today. We apologize for our faith instead of using it. We play instead of pray. It is time for a change. Join with me in a new commitment to pray. God Bless. Pastor Bob

Father’s Day

Happy Father’s Day!!! As a father, I consider my children as my pride and joy. Everyday as they were growing up was a new adventure. What an amazing thrill to see a little living being recognize you as you walk into the room. Their smile would melt your heart.

I must admit it was kind of scary at times because they wanted to do everything you did. They wanted to be like you. What a responsibility to teach them properly and live correctly in front of them all the time. They see my mistakes and unfortunately imitate some of them.

The Apostle Paul admonishes fathers to not exasperate their children but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord (Eph. 6:4). Certainly there are many things in this world that try to take our time but as fathers, we must keep the training of our children as the most important thing that we have to do. It will take all the guidance of the Lord but with His help we can do it. Happy Father’s day. Pastor Bob

Memorial Day

On Tuesday, June 6, 1944 D Day began the Allies invasion on the 5 beaches of Normandy, France. The weather was marginal but the cost of delaying the invasion was too high so the invasion began.

So much planning had been done to make the invasion as successful as possible. Various signs had been given to deceive the Germans into believing that the invasion would be somewhere else. That had worked. Certain German tank divisions were located miles away so they were not a problem with the original landing. German commander Erwin Rommel felt the weather was too bad for a landing and took a holiday away from Normandy.

U.S. Army Division Big Red One would land on Omaha Beach of Normandy. Just about everything that could have gone wrong went wrong. The weather was bad and many soldiers were sick from the ride across the channel. The forward observer plane that was supposed to help with the artillery bombardment from the ships was shot down by the American troops. The overcast sky kept the bombers from dropping bombs on the German pillboxes and artillery. So not a single shot was fired against the Germans until the landing was begun.

The amphibious American tanks mostly sunk in the rough waters. The soldiers loaded down with 70 pound backpacks and weapons were dropped too deep in the water and many drowned. Other dropped on sandbars and had to wade through neck deep water and then walk unprotected through 200 yards of open beach under heavy fire. They were unable to run with all the weight of their loads. It was a slaughter of American troops on Omaha beach.

The Germans had anticipated a landing in this area so they had fortified it. Every area of beach was covered by fire from the Germans.

But the Germans expected a high tide landing due to less exposure to fire over the long beaches the landing troops would be exposed to under low tide. The Allies planned a low tide approach so that the mines and barbed-wire defenses would be exposed.

The thing that saved many lives during the landing was that the Germans ran out of bullets. The numbers of Americans killed during D-day has been revised to about 2500 that day. Over 425,000 German or Allied were killed, missing, or wounded during the Battle of Normandy.

Our battle with the enemy is more difficult to measure because we can’t see the true enemy and we can’t actually kill him. Injuries and victories are more difficult to recognize. But we can learn how to fight and be victorious as Christians in the battle against the enemy.

We need to put on the full armor of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:10-20) With God’s help we can defeat the enemy even though we can’t see him. Praise God as you allow God to help you in your adventure living for Christ. Image

Take nothing for the journey

Jesus sends the twelve disciples on a journey to preach the gospel and heal the sick. I can imagine their excitement. (Luke 9:1-6) But Jesus disrupts their comfort zone when He tells them to not take anything with them. This cuts to the core of their belief system. Do they really believe that God can take care of them?

This was not Jesus telling them not to plan for the future but He was forcing them to look at where their trust really was. How would you do today if the Lord directed you to take a journey with nothing; no staff (protection), no bag (no iPod), no money (or credit cards), and no extra tunic (no change of clothes)? You would have to totally depended on the Lord for everything.

There is another aspect to this story as well. The disciples had to evangelize. They had to talk to people. With no money or food, the only way they were going to get food and a place to stay was by talking to people and doing the job that Jesus had given them. Hunger can be a great motivational tool. Jesus wanted the disciples to focus on the job.

What does that mean to us? We need to examine our lives and see where our trust is and get back to work fulfilling the Great Commission. Have a great day. Pastor Bob

Cast your care on the Lord.

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” You may remember that Scripture from I Peter 5:7. The reality of that Scripture deeply touched me once when I read it.  How could an infinite God care for me?

What you may not know is where that Peter probably got that Scripture from, Psalms 55. In this Psalms the author struggles with life. He even says that he wishes he had wings so he could fly away. He speaks of being betrayed by those closest to him. In verse 22 he says, “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.”

If you are struggling today, cast your care on the Lord because He really does care for you. He will help you through whatever difficulty you are enduring. Praise God. Pastor BobImage

Should a man like me run away?

“Should a man like me run away?” Nehemiah asked this question when the false prophet Shemaiah recommended he hide in the temple because they were going to kill him tonight. What should he do? He wanted to protect himself, but God had a mission for him. Nehemiah did the right thing and didn’t hide in the temple but stayed among the people.

This is a powerful lesson for all of us. When the going gets tough, don’t hide in the temple but stay put and trust God. If God put you there, He can protect you regardless of what it looks like. He can give you the wisdom and resources that you need. Just trust Him. Praise God!!!

See ya, Pastor Bob

Our God will fight for us.

Nehemiah prepared the people for the fight that was going to happen. “Don’t be afraid of them,” he said. Fear keeps you from doing the things of God. Fear makes you focus on the size of the problem and not the size of your God.

“The Lord is great and awesome,” Nehemiah says, “but… you are still going to have to fight.” Just because you become a Christian does not mean that nothing goes wrong. Our God will fight for us but we have to be engaged in the battle. Remember when you struggle with life, to not look at the problem but look at God. He is bigger than your problem. “Our God will fight for us.” Praise God. Have a great day. Pastor Bob
