Vantage point…

Vantage Point or Where is Jesus the King of the Jews…

[Matthew 2:1-12; Luke 2:1-40]

No one was really looking for the birth of Jesus but these passages of scripture show how different groups of people responded to the coming of the Christ.  Even though the religious leaders knew where Jesus would be born, they didn’t make the effort to go find the Christ child.  The Shepherds on the other hand sought out the Christ child.  Where do you fit in?  Are you truly seeking Jesus as Lord of your life?  I hope you are.  See ya, Sunday.

Two nails or yielded

[Luke 1:26-38]

God used this young girl to give birth to his son.  Why? Because she had favor with God.  That favor was brought about by her obedience to God in the small things.  God wants us to obey him in the small things as well.  Once we do that, God can trust us with bigger things. We need to pay attention to our lives and see where we are headed.  If we project our lives out 10 years, where will we be if we keep doing what we are doing?  I know where I want to be.  Yielded to God!!!

Where’s the beef?

[Isaiah 58:1-9]

What a powerful passage of scripture.  God’s chosen fast involves breaking the yoke, overcoming sin, and reaching out to others.  Charles Finney didn’t want people to pray for him because he didn’t think their prayers worked.  Ouch.  Like the Wendy’s commercial from a few years ago, we wonder “Where’s the beef” or power in our prayers.  Prayer and fasting helps you get through to God and have more power in your prayers. Try it.  You’ll see.

The prayer of a righteous man!

God wants to answer your prayers.  James 5:17 tells us that the prophet Elijah is just like us.  And he got his prayers answered.  Let’s draw closer to the Lord this week and see our prayers answered.

Missionaries Gilbert and Gladys Rodriguez

We had a great service as Missionaries Gilbert and Gladys Rodriguez shared about their ministry in Spain.  They shared how God used unusual ways to open doors for them.  An example of this was when Gladys baked cookies for the neighbors and God opened the doors for ministry when nothing else seemed to be working.  Gilbert shared numerous challenges and successes including a Convoy of Hope which opened the door of ministry to the Muslim community.  The service was followed by a wonderful time of fellowship.  Join us next week as we continue our discussion of prayer and how to make yours more successful.

Prayer

Charles Finney was born in 1792.  Though he wasn’t raised in a Christian home, he became converted in his early 20’s.  Before he was converted, Finney observed that the Christians around him did not get their prayers answered.  This bothered him.  He made it a life study to understand how prayer worked.  Eventually he began preaching the gospel with amazing results.  Whole towns were converted.  He gave credit for his results to his time spent in prayer and the work of the Holy Spirit.
We began our study of prayer this week looking at the Lord’s prayer.  Jesus gave us a model to help guide us.  If we are to be successful in our Christian walk we must learn to pray more effectively.  Join us.  See you Sunday.

Why shouldn’t I be baptized?

Philip was used mightily by God in a revival in Samaria.  From there he was directed by the Lord to the road to Gaza.  There he met the Ethiopian eunuch who was reading from the Book of Isaiah in his chariot.  Philip struck up a conversation with the eunuch and joined him in his chariot.  As they continued down the road, Philip explained to the eunuch the prophesies of Jesus’ crucifixion.  As part of their discussions, Philip must have explained to the Ethiopian the importance of baptism because seeing water, the Ethiopian said, “Look here is water, Why shouldn’t I be baptized.”  So they stopped and Philip baptized him.
Baptism doesn’t save anyone but it is important for someone to be baptized once they have accepted Jesus into their heart. Going down in the water represents dying to self and coming out of the water symbolizes living to Christ.  The act of being baptized testifies to anyone watching that the person being baptized has accepted the teaching of Jesus. We continue next service with our Christian life series and a closer look at how prayer works.

You must be born again!

What a wonderful service Sunday as we began our Christian Life Series.  The story of Nicodemus coming to Jesus at night teaches us so much.  “You must be born again” emphasizes our need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”  This foundational scripture highlights the love and concern that God does have for each of us.  We were so thankful for those that responded  to the love of God and gave their lives to God Sunday.  Join us this Sunday as we continue our Christian Life Series  with the story of Philip.  See you then.

Jonah 3 and 4

We finished our series on the The Book of Jonah.  Jonah teaches many valuable lessons: “The Soverignty of God”, “The Discipline of God”, and “The Forgiveness of God” are a few.  From Jonah we learn the value of forgiving others and how much God loves the unlovely and unsaved.  It is imperative that we examine ourselves and let the Lord reveal to us where we need to forgive.  Join us next Sunday as we begin the  “Christian Life Series” which will help us understand the fundamentals of Christianity.  See you there.

Missionaries Clinton and Jane Caszatt

What a wonderful service Wednesday, October 20th, as the missionaries Clinton and Jane Caszatt shared about their ministry with Global University.  God is using them mightily to train pastors in the Middle East and Africa among other places.  But what impressed me most was the prayer time after the sermon.  Dr. Caszatt took time to pray with everyone individually.  Peoples’ lives were changed.  If you weren’t there you missed it.

As I visited further with the Casaztts,  I was impressed with the depth of their relationship with God.  It encourages me to work even harder to get to know the true and living God.  The Apostle Paul says in Philippians 3:10 “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection…”  That it my goal as well to know Christ better.  I prayer that is your goal as well.

Sunday,  I finish the series of sermons on the Book of Jonah.  Jonah shows us a great deal about the heart of God.  God cares about people.  He cares about you.  Hope to see you there.
